Microsoft Will Cease Support Internet Explorer 11 August 2021

Once the only gateway to the Internet, Internet Explorer 11 is finally coming to an end 17 August 2021. Since the start of the web browser in 1995, Microsoft has finally decided to pull the plug on IE 11.
The web browser will no longer be for Microsoft’s online services including Outlook, OneDrive, and Office 365 to name a few.

“This means that after the above dates, customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11. For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11. While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge.“

Internet Explorer Legacy Mode

For those businesses who need Internet Explorer to access older sites, the new Internet Explorer legacy mode within the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser will allow them to do so.

Keep in Mind

The Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app will no longer receive new security updates after 3 March 2021.

Microsoft Edge

The new Microsoft Edge is built on the open-source Chromium project, the same foundation used by Chrome. This means that sites will perform the same on Microsoft Edge as they do on Chrome, and that you likely won’t experience the traditional compatibility problems you saw with IE.”

Internet Explorer 11’s End with Microsoft Teams

Microsoft will also end support for Internet Explorer 11 within the Teams web app. Support will officially end 30 November 2020.

Summary of Dates

  • 30 November 2020 – Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported on the Microsft Teams web app.
  • 17 August 2021 – Remaining Microsoft 365 apps and other services will no longer support IE 11.
  • 9 March 2021 – End of security updates for Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop application.
